Today's hearing by Supreme Court of India for granting bail to veteran social activist Dr. Binayak Sen (from tribal areas of Chhattisgarh), represents one of the very few examples that prove the age old saying -'Truth wins'.
It has been a very long struggle for Dr. Binayak Sen. He was arrested by the state on the charges in sedition and various others and was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Chhattisgarh high court. But Supreme Court rejected the argument by saying that, 'Mere possession of Naxal literature does not make a person a Naxalite, guilty of sedition, as one who possesses Mahatma Gandhi's autobiography can not call himself a Gandhian.
Dr. Sen once said in an interview to news media that, he is being falsely charged by the state because he had become aware of some serious misdeeds of the state in the tribal areas of Chhattisgarh. He came to understand that, state government was supporting various illegal mining activities in the state, and in doing this several human rights were also being violated openly. The government could not stand to risk its luxury, so it framed Dr. Binayak by alleging false charges of treason and Naxalitism.
It is argued that, Naxals are groups waging a violent struggle on behalf of landless labourers and tribal people against landlords and others (like state). The Naxalites say, 'they are fighting oppression and exploitation to create a classless society' and their opponents say, 'the Naxalites are terrorists oppressing people in the name of a class war'. But, its very difficult to tell who amongst them is right!
Another argument is that, many small and regional political parties supported by land Mafias actually fund these naxalites! This can be believed based on one very interesting fact that, they (naxals) are present on only in mineral rich areas, whether it is in Bihar, Odisa, or Chhattisgarh. However, if it was only because of oppression by state then they should have been present everywhere in India!
